Newb Area

The Newb Area is where I try to pass on any tips or tricks I encounter in the world of EVE. If I encounter links or videos they will also be posted here.

1) Good Advice
We all know how we discover small things after playing a game just for a few days or weeks. Things we would really like to know from the beginning of our new gaming adventure.

The first thing I was told was not to use the autopilot, and since then I've been told more things than I can remember - and found some out myself.

Autopilot
Really, don't use it. The reason is it will put you far away (15km) from a stargate to make the quick jump. This can be a matter of life and death. If you get caught this far away from a gate you might as well just look for a new ship.

Group Weapons
When I discovered this feature I was so happy it's hard to imagine. No more pressing half of my F-keys to blow things up. Depending on the ship I might have them grouped in 1, 2 or 3 groups now. So much easier for anything with multiple targets.

Drone Groups
A great feature I was told about. When I fly missions this is great as my ship has enough drone space to fit 10 drones. This means I have one group for my war drones and another for my salvage drones. Make it nice and easy to master and control drones.

Inventory (when docked)
This is not the biggest trick in the world, but it simply means you can let a shortcut slip from your mind. When docked you just double click anywhere in the hangar and your inventory window will open.

Local Chat
Have an extra chat window only for your local chat. This way you can easily check if there's people in the system that are placed on your watchlist or has a bad standing with CONCORD.

Don't Rush It
This is the absolute hardest thing to keep in mind as a new player. We all want to get into that special ship ASAP. But as many other blogs and articles say: don't rush it.
The reason is that flying a ship is not the same as using a ship. It's a thing you simply can't understand at first. Hell, it's taken me about 2 months to get to terms with this. But train for a ship and then train the needed skills to get the most of the ship before you move on - unless there's a good reason not to.

2) Careers
If you've played through the tutorial missions you might have an idea about the style of play that appeal to you. If not that's ok too. But even if you've found the path that's right for you then you might need some additional info or simply would like to know what else is out there.

I'll save you a lot of time researching with one simple link: EVE Careers Guide (55MB PDF)

3) Skill Plan
One of the most important things when you start EVE is your skill training. The sooner you find the right path in training the sooner you'll be able to hold your own in any given area of EVE.

Using the in-game skill interface is a drag, especially for new players. My main advice is to get any of the following software solutions to aid you with your training plan. This way you can plan your training needed for the next ship you want to fly. The mobile software also has other nice features - but not as important if you ask me.

Aura (Android) - Link
Neocom (iOS) - Link
EVEMon (PC) - Link

As it is I haven't found a good solution for Mac users. There's some outdated software out there. Personally I use Neocom on my iPhone, and it's got what I need.

Note: there's no such thing as wrong skill training - but you can certainly have it take longer than needed or desired.
